Before career day, I had a good idea of what the day was going to be like. I have been at her house before career day on a busier day, so I wasn’t sure if it was going to be as busy as that day. Her job consists of her doing makeup and hair for special events. I knew that she wasn’t going to have many customers because it was the day before prom, and not the actual day of prom. She had a lot of free time, so I interviewed her and got to hear her perspective on being a makeup artist. Interview questions:
How do you interact with other people during your work?
“ I work at my house, the only people I interact with are my customers. I don’t have to worry about co worker problems, and problems with bosses because I am my own boss. Doing makeup takes a long time, I get to know them and talk to them while I’m doing their makeup. If I keep them interested they would most likely want me to do their makeup for another occasion.”
What are the most important rules or practices that you must follow in order to be considered a dedicated and responsible professional?
“Being on time even though I work at my house is important. When you’re prepared by having everything set up, the customers take you seriously as a professional. I like keeping a calendar with upcoming dates, staying organized is one important skill I use at my job”
Is this a typical work day for you? If not, what is a typical work day?
“Everyday is different. I am not always busy, but I find other ways to keep busy. Like doing my family's makeup and having photo shoots.”
The day went by pretty slow but smooth. I wasn’t nervous or excited because I shadowed my cousin, and it wasn’t anything new. My cousin taught me that the professional world and your job all depends on you. You can’t depend on others to get your job done. We had free time because she only had to do one person’s makeup during the whole day. The rest of the time, she practiced on her mannequin, I got to help her with the hair. This career doesn’t interest me personally, but I still appreciate it. I understand her job, but I wouldn’t want to pursue it as a career. This career day helped me figure out that I wouldn’t want a job in the makeup and hair business. Overall, I appreciate my cousin taking time out of her day to let me shadow and interview her.
